True, the US versions of soda bread as we learned (and linked to an article in our writeup) is definitely different than the Irish one, which usually doesn't have the extra add-ons (which we believe were added for preservative qualities. It is interesting though to hear that our Irish Soda bread isn't very Irish at all--kind of like how pizza is way different here than in Italy.

Hi Anonymous: Sorry for any confusion--though we made them in a scone PAN, we did make an Irish Soda Bread Recipe. While they do look like scones, it is merely the shape that should suggest that--the taste was not scone-like. Here is the recipe we used: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Amazingly-Easy-Irish-Soda-Bread/Detail.aspxCakespyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11540351035366591645noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8554049149798699784.post-18882678284196804942008-03-21T10:18:00.000-07:002008-03-21T10:18:00.000-07:00Hmm while those look quite interesting, I have to ...Hmm while those look quite interesting, I have to defend the Irish soda bread for all us Irish out there! Soda bread is indeed brown, wholemeal bread - absolutely gorgeous freshly toasted with thick butter melting into it. Delicious! What you have made is a scone, which is made from white flour with raisins in it. Though I applaud you for making them green, with icing, very creative! Any Irish mammy would turn in her grave hearing this been called soda bread though..lol!
This is what it typically looks like.
http://www.aminglingoftastes.com/2006/08/whole-wheat-irish-soda-bread.html

6 oz (175 g) wholemeal flour
2 oz (50 g) plain flour
2 oz (50 g) pinhead oatmeal
1 oz (25 g) wheatgerm
1 level teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
1½ level teaspoons salt
1 level teaspoon sugar
1 large egg
10 fl oz (275 ml) buttermilk
a little extra flour for dustingAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8554049149798699784.post-24991002491633788622008-03-20T20:21:00.000-07:002008-03-20T20:21:00.000-07:00A very creative post! I've traveled to Ireland and never once did I see those white scone-like loaves when I was there. And never did I see raisins and other stuff in the loaves.

The breads they had in Ireland were a dark brown and were absolutely delicious. I've tried to figure out how to make them without success. I think they must have a flour that we don't have.

OK, vent over ... and probably misplaced, since this is a CAKE blog ... but thanks for letting me get that off my chest.Tracyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04465184138365516108noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8554049149798699784.post-16759440234172941152008-03-20T19:11:00.000-07:002008-03-20T19:11:00.000-07:00This was such a fun post! That shamrock knitting you did though--off the hook cute, dude!

Diana: to you too!

Ley: Oooh, that sounds like a nice topping for it.
