Ococoa Chocolate Peanut butter cups
Need advice on how to burn dessert with panache? Find it here.

Lenôtre est mort--we loved learning more about his life and contributions to the world of pastry.

Gale Gand tells us where to eat sweets in Chicago--but lucky us, we'd already been tipped off about a lot of these places by Natalie of Bake and Destroy and Claudia of Babushka Bakery!

We're impressed by the eclectic array of shippable desserts (including baklava, rice pudding, cinnamon rolls and cupcakes!) we found at foodsoftheweb.com.

These artistan, handmade butter cups (not just peanut butter!) by Ococoa look deliciously indulgent. Pictured top.

Mini Pies Vs. Cupcakes
First of all, National Pie Day is coming up--what are your plans? If you're in Seattle, do join us at this grassroots Pie Day Celebration.

Cake Gossip: Little birds have told us that two New York bakeries are planning respective second locations: Billy's Bakery and Pinisi Bakery. Thanks to Steph and Stacie Joy for the tips!

Could North Jersey be the next big bakery hub? We wouldn't mind trying out the chocolate-green tea cookie sandwiches at Cocoa Bakery or the organic sweets at Made With Love.

A bit further down the shore, the Macaroon Shop has a new website too!

How do you make the world sweeter with your baking? Enter a contest at Pillsbury's website!

Sweet Spot: Dessert Links!

Chontrale Runs On Dunkin'

They say it's the most wonderful time of the year, but we say it's the sweetest. Same difference, we suppose. Anyway, here are our favorite sweet links as of late:

Winter Wonderland: Bergdorf Goodman's chocolate castle is fanciful and sweet.

Oscar-worthy: we'd never seen Kirsten Lepore's sweet film before Cakespy reader Allyn pointed it out, but we're so glad we found it. (Warning: video with sound plays when you click through)

Vegan Angel Food Cake: Is it really possible? The Mistress of Cakes says so.

Why we're going to move to Chicago one day: Cakespy's gotten so much Bake+Destroy love lately, it's sick. In a good way.

Cigare Afficionado: We love the dainty and delicious cigare cookies by Yoku Moku.

America Runs on Dunkin', but we'd rather have this cake by Destini than doughnuts any day (picture top).

In Chicago, The Meatloaf Bakery: It looks like rows of loaf cakes and cupcakes, but there's no sweet surprise here: they're all made of meatloaf. We're alternately intrigued, and tempted to throw up in our mouths, by this one. (Photo left)

Love Cream Puffs? Looking for a sweet investment opportunity? Beard Papa's is looking for franchisees domestically and abroad.

We have to admit, we're charmed by those cookies they give you at Doubletree Hotels. Little did we know, they're available by the tin at Christie Cookies.

Do you know the Muffin Man? Who cares, when you can get friendly with Marshmallow Men?

Sweetiepie in Norwich Notes

Golly, the internet is a sweet place! Here are the places we've been getting our fix this week:
Did you really need another reason to just get out there and vote? How about free sweets? A huge number of bakeries, doughnut joints and ice cream shops are offering either free, discounted or special goodies today in celebration of the big event--Cupcake Royale (Seattle), Retro Bakery (Las Vegas), Ben + Jerry's (all over), Cupcake Jones (Portland), and so many more!

Bmoresweet bakes cupcakes for her candidate. Delicious!

Cards from Bethany's shop!
So sweet: new silkscreened cards from Bethany Schlegel Art + Design.

Grown-up candy bars that we're in love with at bonbonbar.com.

We definitely need more event planners like Amy Atlas: she does dessert parties!

After reading about them in Vogue and Coolhunting, all we can say is when, when will you open, oh soon-to-be darling of Greenwich Village, Sweetiepie? When we went by last month, all we saw was construction!

How to serve dainty desserts? How 'bout on sweet monogrammed plates by LA Plates? We love the solid pink style!

It was about time this little-known dessert hit the mainstream: say hello to StickyToffeePuddingCompany.com! (via the Nibble)

Fred's Peace of Cake
The internet is a sweet place: here's what we're in love with this week!

Have yourself a peace of cake: invest in Fred's new peace-sign shaped cake pan! Not only will you have a cool-looking cake, but you'll be helping give back: a portion of proceeds will be used to contribute to nonprofit organizations dedicated to peaceful resolution of conflict. It can also be purchased here! (We love Fred!)
Did you enjoy our sweet trompe-l'œil a while back? Well, you'll get a kick out of Feeding Maybelle's complementary post: savory foods made to look like sweets, including meat loaf smothered in mashed potatoes and made to look like Baked Alaska and a savory bean layer cake.
I didn't make these but I wish I had
Coco Cake makes the cutest petits-fours ever. Period.
A retail bakery dedicated to the Black and White Cookie? Yes please. Open your next store in Seattle though!
Not new, but we just discovered (and are alternately fascinated and disgusted by) the Krispy Kreme Burger. Sweet surprise, or heart attack on a plate? Perhaps a little of both?
Did you know that September was National Biscuit Month? Better late than never--we love the cinnamon-and-sugar smothered  variety at Callie's Biscuits from Charleston.
Chefshop.com sells Goat's Milk Dulce de Leche, and offers this sweet legend:
It is said that Dulce de Leche was first created on a battlefield in Argentina in 1829. The story goes that two opposing generals were to meet to sign a war-ending treaty. While a serving woman was making sweetened milk ("La Lechada") for one of the generals, there was a scuffle and she forgot about the heating milk. When she finally remembered the milk, it had cooked down to a jelly-like consistency, turned a dark brown, and was absolutely delicious. Dulce de Leche was born, and was enjoyed by the brave and very hungry soldiers.

Fact or fiction? Either way, a wonderful story about a sweet treat that can't be beat.

Til next time, stay sweet!

Sweet Spot: Dessert Links!

Weekly links! There's a lot of sweet stuff on the internet--but these were so sugary we had to share!

We're totally digging the autumn brownies, decorated like candy corn and acorns, at Simply Divine Brownies.

Chewy ice cream? Apparently so, at Ilili in NYC (hint: there's also a NY Times article on the phenomenon).

Sweet gift idea: 1-800-Flowers comes out with shippable cupcakes.
Mandel (or Mondel) bread: the next big thing? Maybe so, with businesses like Lulu's and Marla's cropping up.
Feeling chilly? Stay warm and sweet with the cupcake beanie from the sweeties at Fred Flare.
Are you still twirling your own marshmallows over a campfire like a jerk? Have a machine do the spinning for you with the Spinmallow.
Not cake, but completely fascinating: mysterious artist Banksy strikes in Greenwich village with the "Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill" installation.
Check it out: Head Spy Jessie's artwork now online as part of a new contest feature at TasteofHome.com!
