{Bitter}Sweet: A Cake Poll and Cakespy Book Giveaway!

Cake Poll and Giveaway!

It's that time again: our monthly cake poll and giveaway! Our giveaway this month is pretty awesome--the winner will receive a copy of our first ever book--an illustrated collection of Cakespy illustrations entitled {Bitter}Sweet: A Study in Contrasts. Each page has a "sweet" scene (cupcakes acting cute!), contrasted with another "bittersweet" image (cupcakes in peril!) on the accompanying page! It's a sweet collection including 32 pages, packed with illustrations in full color--perfect for any lover of cake, illustration, or, you know, both. Learn more about the book here.
Cover for Books I'm making!!!My books!
As for the poll? This time, we've got cake on the brain! It must be the time of year--Cakespy's birthday is coming up on August 1--we already have all sorts of birthday cake visions floating in our mind!
CAKE POLL: CAKE PREFERENCES!
  1. What's the best time of day to eat cake?
  2. What's your favorite beverage to accompany cake?
  3. There's a plate of frosted cupcakes--all the same flavor--but frosted in pink, white, yellow, blue, green, and lavender. Which would you reach for first?
  4. On a sheet cake: Do you prefer and end, middle, or corner piece?
  5. Cake a la mode (with ice cream on the side): simply perfection, or simply too much?
  6. Grocery store birthday cakes: guilty pleasure, or simply never?
  7. Do you like your cake cold, room temperature, or warm?
  8. When baking a cake or cupcakes, which part of the process do you like best: the baking, or the decorating?
  9. What kind of cake do you like to make (or eat) for your most special occasions?
How can you put your name in the running? It's easy! All you need to do is this:
  • To satisfy our nosy tendencies (we are spies, after all), fill out the above Cake Poll! You can leave your responses in the comment section, or send your responses via email to jessieoleson@gmail.com.
  • At 12pm PST on Wednesday, July 9, the Cake Poll will be closed. The winner will be chosen at random, not based on their responses. The prize will then be shipped to the lucky winner within 48 hours, via the most economical method.
  • As for our fine print: The results of this poll will be used for entertainment and Cake Gumshoeing purposes only; we may summarize the results of this poll in upcoming posts. Your private information will not be shared with any outside parties. Also, we've elected to leave the cake poll open to all US Territories, Canada and abroad--so even overseas cake enthusiasts can take part!

9. Most of the baking I do ends up going to my husband's family get togethers, and they're big citrus fans...so usually something citrusy.

2. tea
3. lavender!
4. middle, otherwise the frosting-to-cake ratio becomes unpleasant.

1. What's the best time of day to eat cake? I usually eat them at about 11am or 9pm. But I love them at any time of the day :)
2. What's your favorite beverage to accompany cake? Tea
3. There's a plate of frosted cupcakes--all the same flavor--but frosted in pink, white, yellow, blue, green, and lavender. Which would you reach for first? Blue, I just love that color
4. On a sheet cake: Do you prefer and end, middle, or corner piece? End, a bit of crust, but not too much
5. Cake a la mode (with ice cream on the side): simply perfection, or simply too much? Too much, it just gets overly sweet and overpowering
6. Grocery store birthday cakes: guilty pleasure, or simply never? Uhm, I have to admit that I sometimes buy a grocery store one when I'm very busy studying. But the taste of homemade is just way better!
7. Do you like your cake cold, room temperature, or warm? Warm, especially chocolate and fruity cake. Others are yummy at room temperature too.
8. When baking a cake or cupcakes, which part of the process do you like best: the baking, or the decorating? Both! Baking and then eating half of the cuppies while decorating :)
9. What kind of cake do you like to make (or eat) for your most special occasions? I can't help myself around anything chocolate or citrusy...

1. Anytime! Well, maybe I have a slight preference for in the evening, after dinner, if I have to limit it to just one... But given no limits, cake for breakfast, lunch and dinner!
2. Perhaps a tasty fruit smoothie, or even a chocolate milkshake for double decadence.
3. Lavender
4. Corner - but only because I don't trust sheet cake to be tasty, and rely on the icing for redemption.
5. Simply perfection!
6. Simply never! Too easy to whip one up, or in a real pinch, it has to be a bakery cake. Never the grocery store!
7. Mmmm, warm cake. The number of times I've made frosting-drenched cake by being too impatient with the frosting process...
8. Decorating, but it's close...
9. I like to match it to the occasion - chocolate is the all-time favourite, though, with a rich ganache to top it off!

6. I don't care for the cakes, generally, but the frosting is as guilty pleasure.

July 8 | Unregistered Commenterbookgrrrl

1. Breakfast! Duh.
2. BIG cold glass of skim milk
3. White.
4. Middle, definitely!
5. Usually too much - the cake gets mushy, and that's not good eats!
6. Depends on the store. Surprisingly, Albertson's had a decent sheet cake. Costco's sheet cakes (sorry!) were a waste of calories, unless you only ate the white cake and rasberry filling and threw out the frosting. Now, if you're talking about Costco's American Chocolate cake, chilled in the fridge overnight, with a big glass of milk...oh baby, oh baby, oh baby.
7. See above. Fudgy chocolate cakes, cold. Normal cakes, room temp.
8. Hmmm...baking. Cleanup is easier! Decorating is very satisfying, though.
9. We love a good fudgy chocolate cake, baked in a bundt pan. (The shape of the pan always makes a nice fudgy ring around the top of the cake. DELICIOUS. Can you tell I like fudgy?

1. What's the best time of day to eat cake?

Any time, though breakfast with a cup of coffee is great!

2. What's your favorite beverage to accompany cake?

Depends on the type of cake, though coffee is always nice.

3. There's a plate of frosted cupcakes--all the same flavor--but frosted in pink, white, yellow, blue, green, and lavender. Which would you reach for first?

White.

4. On a sheet cake: Do you prefer and end, middle, or corner piece?

Middle! Most likely the part that is baked to perfection or a little on the moist side.

5. Cake a la mode (with ice cream on the side): simply perfection, or simply too much?

Simply WAY too much.

6. Grocery store birthday cakes: guilty pleasure, or simply never?

Simply never.

7. Do you like your cake cold, room temperature, or warm?

It depends on the cake. Chocolate molten cake must be warm. Flourless chocolate cake must be cold. Everything else is good room temp.

8. When baking a cake or cupcakes, which part of the process do you like best: the baking, or the decorating?

Baking, for sure.

9. What kind of cake do you like to make (or eat) for your most special occasions?

My flourless chocolate cake. mmmmm

1. Ummm...now?
2. Shato Farms Skim Milk - delish!
3. Lavender

5. Simply perfection
6. Simply NEVER? (yeah, i'd eat it if it were sitting in front of me)

9. Unadorned Angelfood cake is my birthday treat of choice

July 8 | Unregistered Commenterjennifer h.

Congratulations on the book Jessie! And I just watched your interview. Look at you keepin' it sweet in the heat! : )
And here are my answers too!

1. Anytime is fine by me, but after dinner is always good.

2. Vanilla rice milk or coffee.

3. I think I'd pick the color based on my mood, but maybe lavender.

4. Middle piece.

5. Definitely with ice cream!

6. I don't know that I'd consider them a guilty pleasure, but I've definitely enjoyed quite a few.

7. The temperature depends on if it's frosted or not and the temperature of my beverage. If there is no frosting, like with pound cake and it's cold out and I'm drinking something hot, then warmed is best. If it's frosted with a cold drink, then I like a cold cake.

8. I like them the same, but the decorating is fun.

9. Hmmm. In general, I make special occasion cakes for other people, not myself, so it's their choice not mine. A cake for me is nice and simple usually. I loved my Obama Celebration cake. One layer, chocolate, with a liquor glaze.
