{Bitter}Sweet: A Cake Poll and Cakespy Book Giveaway!

Cake Poll and Giveaway!

It's that time again: our monthly cake poll and giveaway! Our giveaway this month is pretty awesome--the winner will receive a copy of our first ever book--an illustrated collection of Cakespy illustrations entitled {Bitter}Sweet: A Study in Contrasts. Each page has a "sweet" scene (cupcakes acting cute!), contrasted with another "bittersweet" image (cupcakes in peril!) on the accompanying page! It's a sweet collection including 32 pages, packed with illustrations in full color--perfect for any lover of cake, illustration, or, you know, both. Learn more about the book here.
Cover for Books I'm making!!!My books!
As for the poll? This time, we've got cake on the brain! It must be the time of year--Cakespy's birthday is coming up on August 1--we already have all sorts of birthday cake visions floating in our mind!
CAKE POLL: CAKE PREFERENCES!
  1. What's the best time of day to eat cake?
  2. What's your favorite beverage to accompany cake?
  3. There's a plate of frosted cupcakes--all the same flavor--but frosted in pink, white, yellow, blue, green, and lavender. Which would you reach for first?
  4. On a sheet cake: Do you prefer and end, middle, or corner piece?
  5. Cake a la mode (with ice cream on the side): simply perfection, or simply too much?
  6. Grocery store birthday cakes: guilty pleasure, or simply never?
  7. Do you like your cake cold, room temperature, or warm?
  8. When baking a cake or cupcakes, which part of the process do you like best: the baking, or the decorating?
  9. What kind of cake do you like to make (or eat) for your most special occasions?
How can you put your name in the running? It's easy! All you need to do is this:
  • To satisfy our nosy tendencies (we are spies, after all), fill out the above Cake Poll! You can leave your responses in the comment section, or send your responses via email to jessieoleson@gmail.com.
  • At 12pm PST on Wednesday, July 9, the Cake Poll will be closed. The winner will be chosen at random, not based on their responses. The prize will then be shipped to the lucky winner within 48 hours, via the most economical method.
  • As for our fine print: The results of this poll will be used for entertainment and Cake Gumshoeing purposes only; we may summarize the results of this poll in upcoming posts. Your private information will not be shared with any outside parties. Also, we've elected to leave the cake poll open to all US Territories, Canada and abroad--so even overseas cake enthusiasts can take part!

What's the best time of day to eat cake?
WHENEVER.

What's your favorite beverage to accompany cake?
Milk.

There's a plate of frosted cupcakes--all the same flavor--but frosted in pink, white, yellow, blue, green, and lavender. Which would you reach for first?
Pink. (funny question. I wouldn't have thought about it, but it is funny how we choose!) Oh, and blue last.

On a sheet cake: Do you prefer and end, middle, or corner piece?
Corner for sure. You get some of the frosting that has made it to the side.

Cake a la mode (with ice cream on the side): simply perfection, or simply too much?
Can you believe I am saying this? I don't think cake usually needs ice cream. But then again, if it is dry, ice cream helps.

Grocery store birthday cakes: guilty pleasure, or simply never?
Totally depends on the store. Some are downright amazingly wonderful sweet treats and others are just blah.

Do you like your cake cold, room temperature, or warm?
Room temp.

When baking a cake or cupcakes, which part of the process do you like best: the baking, or the decorating?
The eating. I guess the baking because the decorating always turns out to be a mess for me.

What kind of cake do you like to make (or eat) for your most special occasions?
Ice cream or Harvest Bakery Cakes (Bristol, CT) or Part Favors cakes (Brookline, MA) or if I am making it, CS, I am loving the recipe you sent!

Blue

On a sheet cake: Do you prefer and end, middle, or corner piece?
Middle, I don't like when the frosting overpowers the cake.

Cake a la mode (with ice cream on the side): simply perfection, or simply too much?
Perfect on pie, but not on cake.

Grocery store birthday cakes: guilty pleasure, or simply never?
Guilty pleasure, don't judge!

Do you like your cake cold, room temperature, or warm?
Room temperature

Uhhh...is there ever not a best time???? Duh!!

Depends on my mood, milk, coffee, whiskey...(just joking on the whiskey...I think :))

Probably white...seems like it would be the one that was most...natural?? I try and stay away from food coloring if possible...but I do love bright fun colors.

Corner of course! Lots of frosting!

Perfection!

I think I am somewhere inbetween...I do kinda like them somedays when I feel like going back to childhood...ya know? Like a twinkie.

Yes....I like cake no matter what!

Again...yes...I love it all!

I love my Espresso Brown Butter cake...it kicks A*#

July 7 | Unregistered CommenterNance

1. At night while watching tv after a good dinner.

2. Coffee

3. Green! But, only if it is a pastel green. If not, then blue.

4. Middle. I don't like too much icing. I can't handle all the yummy, sugary sweetness.

5. Cake a la mode is too much. Just give me the cake!

6. Guilty pleasure.

7. I love it warm!

8. The mixing and baking is my favorite part. I don't have the patience for the decorating or the talent. Though I want to learn.

9. For my wedding cake I am having the top layer italian cream, then kahlua and then spice cake. Oh, the spice cake is so yummy. The italian cream is for the man but I could live with just plain old chocolate.

July 7 | Unregistered CommenterDouble K

3.- Lavender
4.- Corner is the best
5.- Oh no, perfection.
6.- Never in a million years

1. Anytime!
2. I usually drink a diet pop. I don't like milk.
3. Pink.
4. Corner piece, so I can get the max amount of frosting.
5. Too much usually.
6. Guilty pleasure--yeah, I admit it.
7. Room temperature.
8. Decorating, definitely.
9. Chocolate cake with chocolate frosting.

July 7 | Unregistered CommenterTanya

1. Either for breakfast or a late late night snack... but that can be the same thing, depending on how you look at it... right?

2. Milk but sometimes a cold beer with chocolate cake hits the spot!

3. White or Pink... I have to choose?

4. Corner

5. those log cakes from baskin robbins have the right ratio of cake and ice cream!

6. I have some pretty good grocery store cakes, so guily pleasure

7. never thought about this... i like all temperature of cakes.

8. the baking

9. homemade chocolate cake

July 7 | Unregistered CommenterKrysta

1. Mid afternoon, since sweets on an empty stomach tend to go over poorly for me.
2. Black coffee to balance out the sweetness.
3. White. Artificial colors = bleh!
4. Corner- gotta love those crispy edges.
5. It depends... Ice cream with unfrosted cake is perfect, but if it's already covered in ganache/icing/frosting, leave the ice cream off of it!
6. Never, ever, ever.
7. Warm is lovely, but I'm not too picky.
8. Decorating! That's where the cake gets much of it's personality.
9. Who can ever say no to a classic chocolate layer cake? :)

July 7 | Unregistered CommenterHannah

1. Anytime is good for eating cake, but chowing down on it late at night is amazing.
2. Milk!
3. Pink! I'm no girly-girl, but something about pink frosting is so delectable. It almost enhances the sweetness.
4. Corner all the way! More icing for me, please.
5. I'm not a fan of having different types of desserts at the same time. I'd rather savor one texture and flavor at a time.
6.The immense amounts of artificial flavoring and preservatives can be a bit creepy, but grocery store cakes are still a guilty pleasure. After all, who can resist a cake with Elmo on top?
7. It depends on the type of cake. Chocolate's best for me when it's gooey and warm, while I prefer carrot cake at room temperature.
8. Decorating! I love getting creative.
9. For super-special days, I have to get my cake from Prantl's Bakery. It's located in Pittsburgh, and I've been getting my birthday cakes there for over a decade. They're famous for their burnt almond torte (which I believe they ship nationwide, though I might be wrong), but they also make the best cookies, cupcakes, and cakes I've ever tasted. The frosting is spectacufabulous! The bakery doesn't get much national attention, but Pittsburghers know and love it. I'd definitely suggest checking it out; I've never had a bad treat from that place!

July 7 | Unregistered CommenterEdgyVeggie

1. breakfast - the main food groups are all covered.
2. cafe latte
3. white, not a huge food colouring fan
4. corner!
5. just the cake s'il vous plait
6. yuk (same with box cake)
7. room temp
8. the baking... love other people's decorations but haven't mastered them myself
9. chocolate with orange filling... I think a chocolate chai cake would be nice too (but haven't tried it)

1. I really love breakfast cake. Oh, and cake at lunch is pretty amazing. Well, cake around dinner time is pretty good too. Oh, and best of all is cake at midnight, with a flashlight in hand so no one knows I am sneaking the last piece!

2. Diet Coke, it cancels out the calories, right?

3. I can only take one?

4. Middle.

5. Pure cake baby!

6. I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

7. Room Temp.

8. The decorating, so long as I leave myself enough time.

9. Dark Choc, as it is my most reliable recipe.

1. Is there really a bad time?
2. Water since it does not take away the taste of the scrumptious cake.
3. Lavender
4. Middle, rather eat more cake than drown in frosting. I know I am weird ;)
5. A must for special occasions.
6. Used to do all the time. Now I am trying on our own for our kids. Made a giant cupcake cake and doing a volcano in August.
7. Room temperature most of the time.
8. Decorating is the most fun, it is relaxing and you can be creative.
9. Giant cupcake - any type of batter will do, although I do like marble.

1. Breakfast... you can still work it off during the day. ;)
2. Frozen cream, also known as ice cream.
3. Pink
4. No preference.
5. Perfection!
6. Simply never.
7. Room Temp.
8. Decorating, and the smell while baking.
9. German Chocolate.

July 7 | Unregistered CommenterD*H*L

1. Best time of day to eat cake: who needs a time?

2. Favorite cake-accompanying beverage: does "cake batter" qualify? If not, champagne.

3. Tempted by icing colors: I am an equal-opportunity cupcake omnivore. If the flavor's all the same, the color wouldn't make a diff to me.

4. Sheet cake: corner piece. That's where the good crunchies are.

5. A la mode: too much, unless the cake is too dry.

6. Grocery store cakes: I would rather chop off a finger.

7. Cake temp: warm from the oven.

8. Process: Eating the raw batter is my favorite part.

9. Favorite special-occasion cake: for me, to eat, it's a hot milk cake with buttercream icing. Simple and sweet. My daughter loves red velvet cake with cream cheese icing. My husband loves ORANGE cake (go figure.) My mother loves pineapple upside down and my dad, like me, loves hot milk. All of these are pretty homespun. And soul-satisfying.

Thanks, Jessie, for the fun!

July 7 | Unregistered CommenterBMoreSweet

# Is there ever a bad time? (Unless you've already eaten too much!)
# Milk
# Blue! There aren't enough blue cupcakes!
# Depends on the frosting. But usually the middle - if it's extra good frosting, maybe the corner, for maximum exposure.
# Only if the cake is warm - and then super awesomeness.
# Uhg.
# Warm if with ice cream or *just* out of the oven. Otherwise, room temp.
# The baking! Specifically right after I pour it all into the pan... lick the spatula!!!
# Fun cakes! I like to decorate designs that challenge me, to surprise and impress everyone.

July 7 | Unregistered CommenterAmmy Lea

1. For Breakfast
2. Really Cold Ice Water
3. Green, as long as it is a mint shade, otherwise, Yellow
4. Middle- it's the gooey-est
5. Simply Too Much, the ice cream makes the ake taste dry (unless it's brownie a la mode...)
6. Grocery Store Frosting= Guilty Pleasure, Grocery Store Cake= Simply Never
7. Room Temperature or Cold NEVER EVER Warm
8. Both- too hard to pick
9. I enjoy making a family recipe for Coconut Cream Sheet Cake, but I also enjoy eating Tres Leche Cake and Hummingbird Cake and Apple Cake with Caramel Sauce...

July 7 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

1. cake should be eaten all day, every day and if one can stomach it, they should never ever stop.

2. Regular old soy milk (8th continent), sometimes a glass of ice water, for for extra tastiness- wine.

3. Probably pink, is the entire cupcake pink? I'm imagining carrot cake with pink frosting. This is what I had at my wedding. yum!

3. I like the end, the frosting better be delicious and I want to have the right ratio going. On picking a middle piece risks losing some of the frosting to the surrounding pieces and a corner, well that's just crazy.

4. Simply too much. My husband likes his cake in a mug with ice cream and then he fills the mug with milk- blaspheomy really...

5. grocery store cakes are only ever allowed if they're ice cream cakes and that's really a whole other thing.

6. Room temperature. Unless it has cream cheese frosting. and then I like the frosting room temp but the cake slightly chilled. The decorating is such fun.
I like making big fancy fudge tripple layer things for occassions but to eat, I like a simple white or yellow cake with white chocolate coconut frosting. Oh, now I want cake.

July 7 | Unregistered Commenterelizabeth

1. Evening!
2. Do I sound typically "British" if I sawy with a cup of tea?!
3. Pink
4. Middle
5. Too much
6. Much prefer to make my own
7. Room temprature
8. The decorating
9. I'm new too baking so at the moment it's simple vanilla cupcakes and a bit of playing with the decorating

Victoria x

July 7 | Unregistered CommenterVintage Tea

1. Anytime of day!
2. Milk
3. Pink!
4. Middle, less frosting and more cake.
5. It depends on the quality of the cake. If it's an awesome cake, ice cream is overkill. If it's a dry cake, ice cream can be the perfect pairing.
6. Simply never. Okay...I'll eat pretty much any cake or cupcake, so not NEVER, but it's really the frosting they use that makes them not good.
7. Room temperature usually but I'll eat it warm or cold too.
8. I generally like the baking better, but decorating is fun too.
9. Devil's food chocolate or Red Velvet.

July 7 | Unregistered CommenterSydni

1. For breakfast. Kick start your day!
2. Milk
3. Oh probably the green one.
4. Corner piece if it's fresh, middle piece if it's yesterday's cake. Unless it had a glaze poured on top, then corner definitely!
5. You know...I never really liked cake and ice cream together.
6. Simply never. Pay $5 for something I could make for about $1.30?
7. Room temperature, please.
8. Baking...am I banned if I say I don't have time to decorate? And I don't really like frosting? (There are a few exceptions- they're amazing!)
9. I love an angel food cake with fresh strawberries, or my cinnamon-chocolate sheet cake. My family seems to prefer the boxed-mix plus Jell-O cakes, with 3 cups of powdered sugar glaze poured over the top.

July 7 | Unregistered Commentermyrnie_twin

1. Anytime of day!!!
2. If I wasn't too busy scarfing down my cake in 1 second, it would be milk!
3. I would reach for the one with the most frosting!! If they were all the same, then probably pink.
4. Prefer them all-- but I guess I enjoy the end the most.
5. Simply too much.
6. GUILTY PLEASURE!
7. All of the above! Mostly room temperature though.
8. DECORATING!
9. One can never go wrong with yellow cake and frosting!
