Cake Poll: Regional Specialties and a Giveaway!

May Giveaway!
What's sweeter than a long weekend? How about Cakespy's Monthly Cake Poll and Giveaway?

This month, you're in for a treat: the kind folks at Yummr have donated a great book for our giveaway, Dorie Greenspan's Baking: From My Home to Yours (c/o Houghton-Mifflin Books). This tome of sweetness has recipes ranging from pinkies-out desserts like Coconut- Roasted Pineapple Dacquoise to simpler but no less delicious Brownie Buttons or mouthwatering pecan biscuits. Can we say delicious?

But wait, there's more: the lucky winner will also win a 2-pack of Cakespy Buttons and a jumbo magnet featuring the sweetest scene, like, in the world--a robot giving a cupcake a flower!

*Also, readers who don't win the cookbook also have other chances to win by visiting Yummr's "Cookbook a Day in the Month of May" Giveaway.
Of course, if you're bummed that you missed out on the buttons, they're for sale at
jessieoleson.etsy.com!

How can you put your name in the running? It's easy! All you need to do is this:

  • To satisfy our nosy tendencies (we are spies, after all), fill out the below Cake Poll! You can leave your responses in the comment section, or send your responses via email to jessieoleson@gmail.com.
  • At 5pm PST on Monday, May 26, the Cake Poll will be closed. The winner will be chosen at random, not based on their responses. The prize(s) will then be shipped to the lucky winner within 48 hours, via the most economical method.
  • As for our fine print: The results of this poll will be used for entertainment and Cake Gumshoeing purposes only; we may summarize the results of this poll in upcoming posts. Your private information will not be shared with any outside parties. Also, we've elected to leave the cake poll open to all US Territories, Canada and abroad--so even overseas cake enthusiasts can take part!

I Live in Louisiana where I was born, but being a military brat, didn't spend much time there. We only have one really good bakery here in Alexandria, LA - Atwoods. Small town. But they do have a good variety. There is a good little bakery about 2 hours north in Shreveport, LA - Julia's. Good breads, etc.
Chocolate cake was always my favorite as a child - with Vanilla Ice Cream. Second only to Birthday Cake. Today my favorite dessert is CHEESECAKE. Any kind. The last dessert that really wowed me was a DoBach (sp)cake - lots of layers with lemon or chocolate in between and on top. YUMMY!!! I really don't like any desserts with coffee in them - other than that, I love it all!!!
Thanks for asking....

Tammie Coe Cakes/ La Grande Orange Market for the wonderful Ooey Gooey Cupcakes!

What was your favorite baked good or dessert item when you were little?
Chocolate chip cookies

What is your favorite baked good or dessert item now?
Still chocolate chip cookies and a large cupcake weakness

What was the last dessert item or baked good that really "wowed" you?
I made my nephew a first birthday cake covered with buttercream and fondant fish-very cute and very tasty.

Are there any desserts or baked goods that you just can't stand?
cream puffs, eclairs, most things with raisins

1. I'm from Santiago, Chile.

2. Still in Santiago.

3. The baked treats? Easy! Everyone who comes to Chile HAS to try alfajores (the real deal people!), pastelitos chilenos (a variety of baked treats filled with dulce de leche), torta tres leches (it's a cake that has condensend milk, heavy cream and evaporated milk... that's why it's called that way: three milks :D)& torta de lúcuma (it's a cake froma fruit wich only grows in Chile wich is absolutely delicious! The cakes may be a sponge cake or a meringue cake...). Now, the bakeries. That's harder... Pastelería Frutillar: It's not tipically chilean stuff, but it's very very good. They sell this cake wich is amazing. It's a walnut sponge cake filled with sour cherries jam and then followed by a "milhojas" layer(no idea how to say that in English) filled with dulce de leche and whipped cream. Yum, yum, yum! Then, to buy the best dulces chilenos you have to go to a little town at the outsides of Santiago named La Ligua...

4. My favourite dessert was by far raspberries with loads of sugar and whipped cream, and really, until now I love it!

5. Now, my favourite dessert is Creme Brulee. There's a restaurant here named Liguria where they serve the best classic creme brulee (and gnochis by the way) ever!

6. Dorie Greenspan's Sticky Buns. Absolutely delicious!

7. I hate Leche Asada, wich is a quite typicall dessert from here
that is mainly a flan. I founf that the taste of the cooked milk is just disgusting!

THANKS FOR THE CHANCE, CAKESPY!

4. What was your favorite baked good or dessert item when you were little? - Star Crunch!!! (but generally anything with chcolate) :)

Thanks! This was fun. :)

I am originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, now I live in Bellingham, Washington.

In Bellingham, I would recommend you try some of the desserts at the Mount Bakery Cafe & Creperie - yum!

My favorite dessert as a child was my mom's creampuffs. Now I would have to go with my flourless chocolate cake.

My mom was visiting for Mother's Day and cobbled together a bunch of recipes to create a creamy rhubarb pie/crisp that was amazing!

I've never met a dessert I didn't like!

1. Where are you originally from? I'm from the Dominican Republic.

2. Where do you live now? The ever-warm Puerto Rico =D

1. Well, I was born in Los Gatos, CA (yes, "The Cats," hee!) but grew up in Hillsboro, OR

2. Greenville, SC

3. I love the little tiny bakeries hidden away in the mountains of southern NC (so far - I haven't lived here that long and am still exploring). Wildflour Bakery in Saluda, NC, and the Village Bakery in Flat Rock, NC. If you visit I'd meet you there (or you might need a guide. Mountain driving can be confusing and dangerous.)

4. Chocolate chip cookies.

5. You want me to pick one? That's like naming a favorite child. I just love a really good, really dense, rich chocolate layer cake, preferably with a nice ganache or mousse (or both!)

6. The hazelnut corner I had from a German baker at the farmer's market in Charleston last weekend. It was just perfect.

7. Anything that isn't done well, particularly cinnamon rolls made by people who don't understand yeast!

*If* the Cakespy crew were taking a road trip across the nation, what baked goods or bakeries would be a must-try in your area (either the area you live now, or the area you're originally from)? Honestly I have only tried one cupcakery in CA - The Frosted Cupcakery - and it was good but I think homemade is better (and cheaper!) than any cupcakery IMO. I've heard raves about Sprinkles in Newport Beach but I've never been.
What was your favorite baked good or dessert item when you were little? frosting in a can
What is your favorite baked good or dessert item now? cupcakes!
What was the last dessert item or baked good that really "wowed" you? Just baked up Dorie's Pecan Honey Sticky Buns and they were SO freaking goooooood.
Are there any desserts or baked goods that you just can't stand? I am not a fan of banana so anything with banana isn't a favorite.
