Cake Poll: Regional Specialties and a Giveaway!

May Giveaway!
What's sweeter than a long weekend? How about Cakespy's Monthly Cake Poll and Giveaway?

This month, you're in for a treat: the kind folks at Yummr have donated a great book for our giveaway, Dorie Greenspan's Baking: From My Home to Yours (c/o Houghton-Mifflin Books). This tome of sweetness has recipes ranging from pinkies-out desserts like Coconut- Roasted Pineapple Dacquoise to simpler but no less delicious Brownie Buttons or mouthwatering pecan biscuits. Can we say delicious?

But wait, there's more: the lucky winner will also win a 2-pack of Cakespy Buttons and a jumbo magnet featuring the sweetest scene, like, in the world--a robot giving a cupcake a flower!

*Also, readers who don't win the cookbook also have other chances to win by visiting Yummr's "Cookbook a Day in the Month of May" Giveaway.
Of course, if you're bummed that you missed out on the buttons, they're for sale at
jessieoleson.etsy.com!

How can you put your name in the running? It's easy! All you need to do is this:

  • To satisfy our nosy tendencies (we are spies, after all), fill out the below Cake Poll! You can leave your responses in the comment section, or send your responses via email to jessieoleson@gmail.com.
  • At 5pm PST on Monday, May 26, the Cake Poll will be closed. The winner will be chosen at random, not based on their responses. The prize(s) will then be shipped to the lucky winner within 48 hours, via the most economical method.
  • As for our fine print: The results of this poll will be used for entertainment and Cake Gumshoeing purposes only; we may summarize the results of this poll in upcoming posts. Your private information will not be shared with any outside parties. Also, we've elected to leave the cake poll open to all US Territories, Canada and abroad--so even overseas cake enthusiasts can take part!

1. Where are you originally from?
Christchurch, New Zealand
2. Where do you live now?
Christchurch, New Zealand
3. *If* the Cakespy crew were taking a road trip across the nation, what baked goods or bakeries would be a must-try in your area?
Custard squares and pavlova are New Zealand specialties - the Aussies often try to claim pavlova as their invention, too, but hey, who cares! It's sugary good - basically a big, soft meringue cake. Custard squares are pastries made with a set custard filling and vanilla icing - however, be wary of imposters - a good custard square can be hard to come by. Denheath make some pretty good ones: http://www.denheath.co.nz/
4. What was your favorite baked good or dessert item when you were little?
Actually, me and custard squares go way back. Although they're a bit less common now, they used to be in every bakery, and if we were getting a special treat it would be to the bakery we'd go - so I'll stay true to the custard!
5. What is your favorite baked good or dessert item now?
Too hard to choose! I really enjoy good cake, or well-compiled fancy desserts at restaurants.
6. What was the last dessert item or baked good that really "wowed" you?
I recently tried Opera cake for the first time, and it was deliciously decadent!
7. Are there any desserts or baked goods that you just can't stand?
No! But I'll always choose chocolate first, and creamy and decadent over light and fruity. :-)

Where are you originally from?? Indiana

Where do you live now?
Indiana

*If* the Cakespy crew were taking a road trip across the nation, what baked goods or bakeries would be a must-try in your area (either the area you live now, or the area you're originally from)?

Jonathan Byrd's carrot cake is worth your time if you find yourself in Greenwood, Indiana.

What was your favorite baked good or dessert item when you were little?

Cupcakes from Roselyn Bakery. We rarely got store-bought treats and thought these were pretty cool.

What is your favorite baked good or dessert item now?

I love cake with buttercream icing.

What was the last dessert item or baked good that really "wowed" you?

Just took a tour of Crowne Plaza hotel at Union Station in downtown Indy looking for future event venue. The tiramisu was devine.

Are there any desserts or baked goods that you just can't stand?

Anything with coconut - ick

1. Where are you originally from? Dutchess County, NY... about an hour and a half north of New York City.

2. Where do you live now? Rockland County, New York. About 35 minutes NW of the George Washington Bridge/Manhattan.

3.*If* the Cakespy crew were taking a road trip across the nation, what baked goods or bakeries would be a must-try in your area (either the area you live now, or the area you're originally from)? Rockland Bakery in Nanuet, NY. They make their baked goods there in there bakery and they are SO GOOD!!! They have every kind of cake, pastry and cookie you could possibly imagine and all are freshly made. Even though breads and such are not really Cake Spy's "thing" you should try their breads and bagels too! We go there for lunch and grab the bagels as they are exiting the oven on the conveyer belt (you are allowed to do that) and they are so hot but when they cool enough for you to touch them they practically melt in your mouth when you eat them. There is no need for butter or anything! YUM!!!!

4.What was your favorite baked good or dessert item when you were little? My great-grandfather's scones. They went perfectly with a cup of tea and great as a late night snack with a little bit of butter on them.

5.What is your favorite baked good or dessert item now? Nothing too fancy for me... dark chocolate cake with vanilla frosting is enough to get me drooling.

6.What was the last dessert item or baked good that really "wowed" you? A slice of strawberry cheesecake from the diner down the street. Who knew a diner would have out of this world cheesecake?

7.Are there any desserts or baked goods that you just can't stand? Are you kidding me????? NO WAY!!!! I am lactose intolerant so creamy things sometimes upset my stomach BUT I'm a glutten for punishment and I'll eat these things anyway and deal with the sick stomach later. It's worth a little bit of a tummy ache for those few minutes of yummy pleasure. LOL!

Where are you originally from? Pearl River, NY (which is about 30 miles outside NYC)

Where do you live now? Wappingers Falls, NY (Down the road from the CIA)

*If* the Cakespy crew were taking a road trip across the nation, what baked goods or bakeries would be a must-try in your area (either the area you live now, or the area you're originally from)?

Oh that is an easy one...you must stop by at Rockland Bakery (http://www.rocklandbakery.com/) which bakes everything on site. They even let you walk into the back where they are often baking bread and/or bagel fresh. You take your bread right off the bakers racks they are cool on...and there are so many different types to choice from. At one point in my life they were open 24 hours but now close their door around 11pm.

What was your favorite baked good or dessert item when you were little? My grandmother's "sugar" cookies and her crumb cake both german style of baking.

What is your favorite baked good or dessert item now? Still the same but now I love me a good chocolate cake.

What was the last dessert item or baked good that really "wowed" you? I made a chocolate chip cake that was really yummy but I don't think I have been wowed in a while...I am due for one.

Are there any desserts or baked goods that you just can't stand? I am not a big fan of carrot cake and I don't feel like it is a dessert.

Where do you live now?

*If* the Cakespy crew were taking a road trip across the nation, what baked goods or bakeries would be a must-try in your area )? Michael's Cafe has some killer cinnamon buns but if you're willing to drive to the middle of nowhere (seriously) there is a tea house called "Home Sweet Home" in Fairlight, SK - The town is the tea house really... She makes all her desserts fresh and from ingredients she has on her farm or buys locally. Her cheesecakes are the bomb! But what is really good... her homemade Fruit Crumble with fresh ice cream.... oooo....

What was your favorite baked good or dessert item when you were little?
My Mother's Chocolate Chip Cookies... The recipe is kept on a bright neon orange card... I will never forget it!

What is your favorite baked good or dessert item now? The Cupcake. Simply because it is the same thing... but in so many different flavours. Simple or Complex - a cupcake is a cupcake.

What was the last dessert item or baked good that really "wowed" you?
.... geez... We went to fancy restaraunt at X-mas where we ordered a baked Alaska. The Mater-D brought out the fancy cart and lit the poor cake on fire... It was spectacular... Until he dropped it on the floor... that really "wowed" me. It was hilarious.

Are there any desserts or baked goods that you just can't stand?
I really don't like those little bars the people bring to church functions... I know they probably taste good - and were made with the greatest of intentions... but some people have no eye for aesthetics.... Half the time they look as if they were scraped off the floor... eew I don't want to eat that....

I want this prize SO BADLY!!!!!!!!

Pick ME! Pick ME!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh yeah, answers!

In nearby Wheaton, there is a Korean bakery called Shilla bakery. They have a very uniquely korean desert which is shaved ice with milk, sweet red bean, fruit, little pieces of sweet rice cake all on top of the shaved ice. On top of this, they have amazing buttery cream cakes that are light and not overly sweet and absolutely amazing.

4. What was your favorite baked good or dessert item when you were little?
Brownies

5. What is your favorite baked good or dessert item now?
Cream puffs

6. What was the last dessert item or baked good that really "wowed" you?
In NY, my mom brought me cream puffs the size of grapefruits that had the most delicious cream inside and had crystallized sugar on the outside. They were so good I bought a box and froze them. You could eat them frozen like ice cream. It changed the taste a little to this delicious frozen treat.

7. Are there any desserts or baked goods that you just can't stand?
A dessert I can't stand? I think that is seriously impossible. I mean there are some I don't like as much as others but damn it if it is sweet I will pretty much eat it!

I am originally from Ohio, now living in California. If in California, stop in a Mexican market, head to the bakery and try the Tres Leches (Milk Cake). The cake has three milk-filled layers: Cake, filling, and topping. There are four types of milk in the filling and topping (whole milk, condensed milk, evaporated milk, and heavy cream). My favorite desert as a child was peach pie, and it still is today. Nothing is better on summer night than a hot slice of pie with a cold scoop of vanilla ice cream. All desserts always wow me; I love desserts. But, I can’t stand Twinkies, or any of those over processed plastic tasting things kids take in their lunch box.

1. I'm going to claim Seattle, WA
2. Connecticut
3. In Seattle, my absolute FAVORITE bakery was a little place called Piroshky Piroshky in Pike Place. They didn't have ANYTHING bad there. There are also some EXCELLENT Chinese bakeries in Chinatown, but I couldn't tell you the specific names!
4. Cheesecake - I couldn't get enough of the stuff. I could never understand why slices were so SMALL. (I had also never heard of a calorie.)
5. I love me a good lemon bar! Ooh...and I can NEVER turn down a moist cupcake.
6. There were samples of Apple Cider donuts the first time I went to Stew Leonard's. I had never heard of them, and they were delicious!
