What's sweeter than a long weekend? How about Cakespy's Monthly Cake Poll and Giveaway?
This month, you're in for a treat: the kind folks at Yummr have donated a great book for our giveaway, Dorie Greenspan's Baking: From My Home to Yours (c/o Houghton-Mifflin Books). This tome of sweetness has recipes ranging from pinkies-out desserts like Coconut- Roasted Pineapple Dacquoise to simpler but no less delicious Brownie Buttons or mouthwatering pecan biscuits. Can we say delicious?
But wait, there's more: the lucky winner will also win a 2-pack of Cakespy Buttons and a jumbo magnet featuring the sweetest scene, like, in the world--a robot giving a cupcake a flower!
*Also, readers who don't win the cookbook also have other chances to win by visiting Yummr's "Cookbook a Day in the Month of May" Giveaway.
Of course, if you're bummed that you missed out on the buttons, they're for sale at jessieoleson.etsy.com!

3. *If* the Cakespy crew were taking a road trip across the nation, what baked goods or bakeries would be a must-try in your area?
Custard squares and pavlova are New Zealand specialties - the Aussies often try to claim pavlova as their invention, too, but hey, who cares! It's sugary good - basically a big, soft meringue cake. Custard squares are pastries made with a set custard filling and vanilla icing - however, be wary of imposters - a good custard square can be hard to come by. Denheath make some pretty good ones: http://www.denheath.co.nz/
4. What was your favorite baked good or dessert item when you were little?
Actually, me and custard squares go way back. Although they're a bit less common now, they used to be in every bakery, and if we were getting a special treat it would be to the bakery we'd go - so I'll stay true to the custard!

Rockland Bakery in Nanuet, NY. They make their baked goods there in there bakery and they are SO GOOD!!! They have every kind of cake, pastry and cookie you could possibly imagine and all are freshly made. Even though breads and such are not really Cake Spy's "thing" you should try their breads and bagels too! We go there for lunch and grab the bagels as they are exiting the oven on the conveyer belt (you are allowed to do that) and they are so hot but when they cool enough for you to touch them they practically melt in your mouth when you eat them. There is no need for butter or anything! YUM!!!!

Oh that is an easy one...you must stop by at Rockland Bakery (http://www.rocklandbakery.com/) which bakes everything on site. They even let you walk into the back where they are often baking bread and/or bagel fresh. You take your bread right off the bakers racks they are cool on...and there are so many different types to choice from. At one point in my life they were open 24 hours but now close their door around 11pm.

In NY, my mom brought me cream puffs the size of grapefruits that had the most delicious cream inside and had crystallized sugar on the outside. They were so good I bought a box and froze them. You could eat them frozen like ice cream. It changed the taste a little to this delicious frozen treat.

I am originally from Ohio, now living in California. If in California, stop in a Mexican market, head to the bakery and try the Tres Leches (Milk Cake). The cake has three milk-filled layers: Cake, filling, and topping. There are four types of milk in the filling and topping (whole milk, condensed milk, evaporated milk, and heavy cream). My favorite desert as a child was peach pie, and it still is today. Nothing is better on summer night than a hot slice of pie with a cold scoop of vanilla ice cream. All desserts always wow me; I love desserts. But, I can’t stand Twinkies, or any of those over processed plastic tasting things kids take in their lunch box.

1. I'm from Santiago, Chile.
2. Still in Santiago.
3. The baked treats? Easy! Everyone who comes to Chile HAS to try alfajores (the real deal people!), pastelitos chilenos (a variety of baked treats filled with dulce de leche), torta tres leches (it's a cake that has condensend milk, heavy cream and evaporated milk... that's why it's called that way: three milks :D)& torta de lúcuma (it's a cake froma fruit wich only grows in Chile wich is absolutely delicious! The cakes may be a sponge cake or a meringue cake...). Now, the bakeries. That's harder... Pastelería Frutillar: It's not tipically chilean stuff, but it's very very good. They sell this cake wich is amazing. It's a walnut sponge cake filled with sour cherries jam and then followed by a "milhojas" layer(no idea how to say that in English) filled with dulce de leche and whipped cream. Yum, yum, yum! Then, to buy the best dulces chilenos you have to go to a little town at the outsides of Santiago named La Ligua...
4. My favourite dessert was by far raspberries with loads of sugar and whipped cream, and really, until now I love it!
